Licorice is a flavorful herb that has been used in food and medicinal remedies for thousands of years. The licorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas), native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to Anise, Star Anise and Fennel, which are the source of superficially similar flavoring compounds.

Apothicaries Corner – Garlic

Other names: Allium sativum L; Poor Man’s Treacle; Rocambole, Stinky Rose; Ail; Allium; Ajo; Eschalot; Suan; The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, being derived from gar (a spear) and lac (a plant), in reference to the shape of its leaves.

The leaves are long, narrow and flat like grass. The bulb (the most commonly eaten part) is of a compound nature, consisting of numerous bulblets, known technically as ‘cloves,’ grouped together between the membraneous scales and enclosed within a whitish skin, which holds them as in a sac.
